Animal Crossing: New Horizons is about to feel brand new again! Just when you thought Nintendo had abandoned your island paradise, they drop a massive surprise: a totally free content update and a performance-enhanced version for the upcoming Switch 2! But here's the kicker: Update 3.0 landed a day early!
Remember the incredible launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons a little over six years ago? (Seriously, where does the time go?!). Many of us assumed Nintendo had moved on, focusing their resources elsewhere. Then, out of the blue, BOOM! Not only was there talk of a Switch 2 version with improved performance, but a huge, free content update was announced for everyone.
Both were slated for tomorrow, January 15th. But Nintendo being Nintendo, they had one last ace up their sleeve: Update 3.0 is live right now!
Spotted the buzz online? The Game Informer team can confirm it: the update is indeed available! And, according to reports from the eagle-eyed folks over at Eurogamer, this isn't just a US phenomenon – the early launch seems to be happening worldwide.
Getting your hands on this early treat is a breeze. For many, like myself, the download started automatically as soon as the Switch was powered on. If it doesn't pop up right away, don't panic! Simply highlight the Animal Crossing: New Horizons icon on your Switch's home screen, press the '+' button on your right Joy-Con, navigate to the 'Software Update' section, and select 'Via the Internet.' Easy peasy!
Now, let's clarify something important: while the free 3.0 update is live and ready to explore, the Switch 2 Upgrade isn't quite ready yet. This is a separate purchase on the Switch 2 eShop (priced at $4.99 in the US, for reference) and is still scheduled to launch tomorrow. At the time of this writing, Nintendo hasn't given the green light for its release.
If you could only choose one to arrive early, the 3.0 update is definitely the one to get excited about first. It packs the bulk of the new content. Think about it: a hotel on Kapp'n's pier, the addition of Slumber Islands (imagine the possibilities!), and a bunch of cool crossover furniture to deck out your island. On the other hand, the Switch 2 upgrade primarily delivers a performance boost, enables larger online multiplayer sessions, and integrates some of the Switch 2's fancy new features (mouse controls and GameChat, anyone?) into your gameplay.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some players might argue that the Switch 2 upgrade, while focused on performance, is just as crucial. A smoother, more responsive Animal Crossing experience with better online capabilities could be a game-changer for those who play regularly with friends. What do you think? Is content king, or does performance reign supreme?
