Dialogue between the players, represented by former WTA chairman and chief executive Larry Scott, and the Grand Slam powerbrokers has been ongoing for almost a year. In March, the players sent a letter requesting a meeting.
During the French Open, Keys and other top players met with Grand Slam leaders to discuss their concerns. This was followed by individual meetings at Wimbledon, attended by Zverev and Belinda Bencic.
The Impact of the Meetings
The meetings have sparked differing opinions. Keys called them "the most productive conversations we've ever had," expressing cautious optimism for the future.
However, Zverev, as an ATP Tour representative, felt there was too much talk and not enough action. He attributes this to the fragmented nature of tennis governance, with separate bodies (Grand Slams, ATP Tour, WTA Tour, and ITF) having their own interests.
The Grand Slams' Response
The Grand Slams maintain their openness to constructive dialogue and defend the prize money and facilities they offer. The Australian Open, for instance, has offered a record prize money of A$111.5m (£55m) for this year's tournament, a 16% increase.
Despite the progress, players like French Open champion Coco Gauff believe further conversations are needed, emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue with all the Slams.
