Roman Hartung, CEO of Thermal Grizzly, a company specializing in high-performance cooling solutions, has sounded the alarm. According to Hartung, copper, a vital raw material, is now harder to source and more expensive. Orders that once took a few weeks now stretch into months, a delay that could disrupt the delicate balance of supply and demand.
The Copper Conundrum: A Global Perspective
Hartung's recent YouTube video detailed his struggle to secure copper at reasonable prices. In October, he attempted to order 12mm copper plates, typically costing around €190 with a quick turnaround. However, his supplier quoted a staggering €280 with a four-month wait. This reflects a broader trend: copper prices have skyrocketed, increasing from $9,000 to $13,000 per ton year-over-year, a 50% hike.

Thermal Grizzly is likely to increase its GPU block pricing from around €500 to €550. Hartung isn't alone in this struggle. CEOs of Be Quiet! and Alphacool face similar challenges. Alphacool CEO Andreas Rutnicki confirms, "Unfortunately, we are compelled to adjust prices by the end of February by approximately 5-10% across all products." Rutnicki highlights the severity of the situation, especially for copper-based products, where raw material prices have increased immensely.
Rutnicki also notes that relying on China for cheap labor and products is no longer a viable solution. Production in Eastern Europe could be more cost-effective, but the necessary infrastructure is lacking.
Be Quiet! CEO Aaron Licht states that his company is currently maintaining stable pricing but warns that this might change if raw material prices remain elevated or intensify.
