"Childhood photographs, family archives, inherited recipes are the obvious choices," Clarke tells us, "but the anemoia perspective allows the system to explore a broader, more universal space. It then delves into the harder, more personal questions."
The machine employs a vision-language model to interpret images, but the real magic happens when users interact with the dials.
Crafting Your Scent Story
Users first select a point of view from the photograph. It could be a person, an object, or even a specific element within the image. If it's a person, they can specify their age, and if it's an object, they can describe its lifecycle stage.
Then, the fun part! Users assign an emotional tone to the photograph, choosing from a range of emotion words. This step is crucial as it determines the final scent profile.
During a trial, Clarke recalls a participant who uploaded a photograph of a couple enjoying fruit in a picturesque garden. The user chose the fruit as the subject, selected "in use," and opted for a "calm" mood. The resulting scent was a delightful blend of spiced apple, pear, and earthy musk.
"The user described being transported to autumn," Clarke shares, "which perfectly aligns with the scent's major components."
Beyond Clichés: The Art of Interpretation
Clarke acknowledges that machines might make obvious associations, but he believes in the power of a shared vocabulary to guide the system towards more nuanced creations.
The current prototype boasts an impressive scent library of 50 fragrances, ranging from sandalwood and pine forest to old books, leather, and sand. Each fragrance is delivered in one-second increments, creating an endless array of unique mixtures.
"The narrative users build around the photograph can lead to unexpected translations," Clarke explains. "Two people can interpret the same beach photo very differently based on their selections."

"In today's world, our memories are externalized, often stored in digital infrastructure," he says. "I want to bring them back to us, make them more accessible and tangible."
Clarke envisions two potential paths for his prototype's future: a desktop-sized device for at-home memory printing and an online service for remote photo submissions.
"I embrace the contradiction of using technology to reconnect with our senses and nature," he adds. "I believe we can create computing forms that encourage us to pause, breathe, and appreciate the world anew."
