Big Change for Great Stirrup Cay: Norwegian Getaway Makes History as First Ship to Dock
The Norwegian Getaway, a vessel from Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), made history on December 28, 2025, as the first ship to dock at Great Stirrup Cay's newly constructed multi-ship pier. This marks a significant milestone for both the ship and the cruise line, as the pier is now capable of accommodating up to two large ships simultaneously.
Great Stirrup Cay, located in the Berry Islands, is a 268-acre resort that was previously only accessible via tender. Now, it has become a full-fledged port call for a 3-night sailing from Miami, which embarked on December 26, 2025. This change is a game-changer for NCL, as it eliminates the need for guests to be ferried between the ship and the shore, a process that could become tedious for larger ships.
NCL's investment in Great Stirrup Cay is substantial, with around $150 million already spent on expansion. The cruise line has introduced several enhancements, including a new island-wide tram service, a family-friendly splash pad, and a massive 28,000 sq. ft. heated pool called the Great Life Lagoon. They've also added a shore-side version of the Vibe Beach Club, called Vibe Shore Club, and a tranquil zone called Hammock Bay, featuring over 50 hammocks.
The most anticipated addition is the new Great Tides Waterpark, set to open in the summer of 2026. This waterpark will feature 19 thrilling slides, a lazy river, cliff jumps, and children's play areas, ensuring a fun-filled experience for all.
The new pier is a crucial part of this transformation, allowing guests to enjoy the island's offerings seamlessly. NCL has confirmed that all ships under Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, including Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises, will benefit from the pier in the future.
The construction of the pier began in January 2025, with the goal of completion by the end of the year. This development is a welcome change for NCL, as it enhances the overall experience for guests and streamlines operations for the cruise line.
