The gaming world mourns the loss of a true visionary: Vince Zampella, the co-creator of Call of Duty and a driving force behind some of the most iconic games of our time. This is a significant loss, as Zampella's innovative spirit shaped the landscape of modern gaming.
According to reports from NBC Los Angeles, Zampella, the brilliant mind behind both Infinity Ward and Respawn Entertainment, tragically passed away in a single-vehicle accident in Southern California on December 21st. He was only 55 years old. His legacy, however, will live on through the countless hours of entertainment he provided.
Zampella's journey began with early roles at companies like GameTek, Atari, Ripcord Games, and SegaSoft. His career took a major leap forward when, alongside Jason West, he co-designed the groundbreaking first-person shooter Medal of Honor: Allied Assault in 2002. This title, inspired by the film Saving Private Ryan, was a massive hit. Allied Assault went on to inspire the console game Medal of Honor: Frontline, which also debuted in 2002. This success led Zampella, West, and Grant Collier to establish Infinity Ward the same year, bringing together the team that had worked on Allied Assault.
The birth of Call of Duty came in 2003, and it was an instant sensation. Activision later acquired Infinity Ward. Under Zampella and West's leadership, Call of Duty became a gaming behemoth. In 2007, Infinity Ward launched the Modern Warfare subseries, with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare setting the standard for the series for years to come. But here's where it gets controversial... Tensions with Activision led to Zampella and West's dismissal in March 2010. They swiftly responded by founding Respawn Entertainment the following month, bringing many of their former colleagues with them.
Zampella remained at Respawn, even after West's departure in 2013, and served as CEO until his death. During his time at Respawn, the studio created the multiplayer-focused Titanfall, the critically acclaimed Titanfall 2, and the wildly popular Apex Legends. They also expanded into different genres, developing the souls-like action games Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. In 2017, Respawn was acquired by Electronic Arts, its publishing partner, and remains a part of that company.
In 2020, Zampella took on the role of heading up DICE's Los Angeles-based studio, known for the Battlefield series. He oversaw the series starting in 2021. DICE LA was renamed Ripple Effect Studios that year, and assisted in the development of Battlefield 6, the best-selling game of 2025 in America.
Zampella's influence is undeniable. His ability to build successful studios and create games that resonate with millions is a testament to his talent and passion.
