Star Wars Special Editions Return Again: What This Means for Fans and Collectors (2026)

Hold onto your lightsabers, Star Wars fans! Just when we thought we were finally getting the original, unedited versions of the classic trilogy, the Special Editions are making a comeback... again!

Last year, the galaxy far, far away buzzed with excitement. For the 50th anniversary of A New Hope, Lucasfilm was set to do something many believed impossible: release the film in its original, unedited form, a version that has been notoriously difficult to find since 1997. But, in a twist that might feel familiar to fans of The Rise of Skywalker, another iteration is hitting the shelves first. It seems the Special Editions have, against all odds, returned.

This week, eagle-eyed fans and Star Wars news outlets spotted a new preorder on Amazon for the original trilogyA New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi – on Blu-ray. What caught everyone's attention were the runtimes, which precisely matched those of the Special Edition versions. These are the George Lucas-altered cuts that have been the exclusive official way to watch the beloved films for nearly 30 years. It struck many as an odd choice, especially so close to the anticipated release of the original cuts. However, it's confirmed: this new release features the Special Editions.

The box art has been revealed, and this collection is slated for release on April 7th with a price tag of $68.

But here's where it gets controversial... For those who have been following Star Wars for the past 50 years, this pattern of re-releases isn't exactly new. Lucasfilm, and its subsequent owners, have a long history of putting Star Wars on physical media in various new editions. Even before the 1997 Special Editions, the films saw multiple VHS and Laserdisc releases. Once the Special Editions arrived, it was like hitting hyperdrive. It feels like a new physical media version of the original trilogy appears on shelves every few years, often coinciding with the release of the prequel or sequel trilogies. According to Wookieepedia, there have been approximately 10 distinct re-releases of the original trilogy since the late 1990s. Some boasted new special features, others sported fresh artwork, but almost universally, they contained the Special Editions.

With the 2027 50th anniversary of A New Hope on the horizon, it appears the company is seizing another opportunity to capitalize on the franchise's enduring appeal. And that's perfectly fine for those eager for a new Blu-ray edition – they'll certainly get one! While there are no official announcements yet for the long-awaited release of the original, unedited films on physical media, it feels like an inevitability. And then, it will likely happen again. And again. Perhaps one day, fans will be so nostalgic for the infamous "Jedi Rocks" sequence that we'll see a 75th anniversary rerelease of the Special Editions! Who knows?

And this is the part most people miss... What we can be sure of is that as long as Star Wars continues to capture hearts, the films will keep reappearing in new formats, old formats, and any format that becomes available. This latest release is just that – the newest iteration, and quite possibly, one of the final appearances of the Special Editions. At least, that's what we're hoping for.
