By overstimulating these receptors, a precisely dosed amount can induce a cascade of severe effects, including muscle twitching, paralysis, seizures, a slowed heart rate, respiratory failure, and ultimately, death. The dart frog implicated by the UK Foreign Office is believed to be Anthony's poison arrow frog, native to Ecuador and Peru. These frogs produce the chemical by consuming specific foods that yield alkaloids, which then accumulate in their skin. If the frog's diet changes, its epibatidine stores diminish. Johnson highlighted the extreme difficulty, stating, "Finding a wild frog in the right place, eating exactly the food needed to produce the right alkaloids, is almost impossible... almost." She further emphasized that epibatidine poisoning in humans is incredibly rare, with the only other known cases being non-fatal and laboratory-related.
What has Russia's stance been on this? European laboratories have indeed confirmed that Navalny died from this obscure poison. Moscow, however, has previously maintained that Navalny succumbed to natural causes. His widow, Yulia Navalnaya, has consistently alleged that her husband was "murdered" through poisoning.
