Yamaha Resumes MotoGP Testing: Overcoming Mechanical Issues at Sepang (2026)

Yamaha has officially resumed its MotoGP testing at Sepang after a brief withdrawal due to a mechanical problem that raised safety concerns. On Tuesday, the team halted its activities on the second day of a scheduled three-day test (source: The Race). Following this unexpected pause, Yamaha declared that a decision regarding participation on the final day would be made the following morning.

However, after intensive overnight collaboration between their engineering teams located in both Italy and Japan, Yamaha managed to devise a temporary solution to the encountered issue. With this fix in place, the team felt confident enough to continue with their testing plans.

The precise details surrounding the mechanical challenge faced by Fabio Quartararo’s machine remain somewhat ambiguous. Interestingly, Quartararo was unable to participate in the last day of testing due to an unrelated injury he suffered during the first morning session (source: The Race). Reports from paddock insiders suggest that the riders returned to action with reduced power and RPM capabilities, which could impact their performance on track.

On the first morning back, Yamaha's remaining trio of riders—Alex Rins, Jack Miller, and Toprak Razgatlioglu—seemed to have a smooth experience, collectively completing 74 laps. Rins registered the fastest lap among them, finishing 12th overall, though he trailed behind the leading Gresini Ducati rider, Alex Marquez, by a margin of 1.178 seconds.

Despite potentially facing a disadvantage due to the temporary measures they implemented, Yamaha's team principal, Paolo Pavesio, emphasized the importance of concluding the test on the track. This is especially crucial as they strive to gather as much data as possible for their brand-new V4 project set to debut in 2026.

"Resuming testing was vital, but we also needed to ensure that we were in a position to do so safely," Pavesio explained to The Race. "Since we are dealing with prototypes, nothing can be taken for granted. These aren't production bikes. However, it was essential to clarify any concerns we had before getting back on the track, as there’s a significant amount of work ahead of us."

He elaborated that the troubleshooting process benefited from the unique time zone difference: "This issue was one we could pinpoint through collaborative work. It’s fascinating how we can use the night hours in Japan to progress work in Italy, and vice versa, while simultaneously working here in Sepang. It’s been a non-stop effort, but essential to wrap up the test on track."

Although Yamaha lost a full day of testing during this critical period, they were granted an additional three days at the shakedown test last week courtesy of their concession status. Pavesio remains optimistic that the team has effectively utilized its pre-season schedule, leading into an upcoming two-day testing session at Buriram before the season opener.

"At the end of the day, this is a completely new bike compared to what we had in Valencia, so we’ve put in considerable effort over the winter," he noted. "It was crucial to determine if all the new components were functioning correctly and working harmoniously, and I can confidently say that we've gathered the necessary information as a foundational base for the season.

Moreover, the riders’ feedback has been notably consistent, which is vital because, with a new project, the more unified the baseline bike is for all riders, the better data we can collect. This consistency will ultimately aid in enhancing our overall performance going forward."

But here's where it gets interesting: will these temporary fixes be enough to keep Yamaha competitive as the season progresses? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
